Norwegian Cruises Fjords
There’s no question: When a person wants to cruise in Norway, there’s only one real reason: The fjords. In fact, “Norwegian Cruises” & “fjords” go together like “peanut butter” & “jelly”. Nowhere else on Earth will you find such a juxtaposition of history, culture, art, and stunning natural beauty. For those of you reading this who are somehow unfamiliar with the concept of a fjord, it is a long, glacial valley which, over time, has become an inlet walled in on each side with sheer cliffs.
What to expect on your cruise
Your first day will be comprised of getting to the ship, unpacking, and settling in, but after that, the real fun begins! For instance, on your trip through and around the fjords, you will visit and pass by many quaint towns, most of which are very old. Take the town of Alesund, for example. It is famous for its art-nouveau architecture, but what you may not know is the story of how it got that distinct character to begin with. In the early 1900s, a fire ravaged the city which was so severe that virtually no building was left standing. In response, donations flooded in from all over the European continent, breathing new life & a new façade into the town.
If you are lucky (or prudent) enough to book one of the cruises which occur from April to September, you may get a chance to see one or more of the world renowned (and UNESCO recognized) fjords that make Norway famous, particularly Geirangerfjord, which boasts spectacular waterfalls & scenery.
Other sights you might enjoy during Norwegian cruises of the fjords are the many Viking settlements and historical outposts which dot Norway’s landscape, safaris (not just in Africa!) which may, if you’re very lucky, afford you a glimpse or two of the wild eagles that make Norway their home, and even a giant maelstrom - a whirlpool that, in elder days, often spelled disaster for unwary mariners.
However, Norway isn’t ALL Vikings & nature - there are some very cosmopolitan, urbane cities which, depending on your particular cruise’s itinerary, you might get to explore - and, for the ladies, shop - til you drop.
Whatever the weather!
Oh, one more thing! For those of you who like to plan your vacations to avoid (or permanently enjoy) a certain season, Norway even offers “weather on demand”! It breaks down like this: If your cruise is taken during the summer months, your overall climactic experience will be better (unless you enjoy the cold, and then Norway DEFINITELY has you covered during the winter!), but regardless of what season you choose to holiday in, there are two unique and beautiful meteorological phenomena associated with Norwegian cruises of the coast / fjords which you may not be aware of: For winter cruisers, the aurora borealis, better known as the Northern Lights awaits, ready to transform your view of the night sky into an unparalleled light show. For the cruisers who go during the summer, there is an event simply called “the Midnight Sun”. Due to the extreme latitudes you will be cruising in, the sun literally never sets during the summer months - you will be enveloped in 24 straight hours of daylight - all the better to socialize & explore!
With so much to see, do, and experience, Norwegian cruises of the fjords & surrounding areas will leave you breathless and ready for more. So.... who wants tickets?
