Norwegian’s Beginnings

Norwegian Cruise Lines started outside of Oslo, Norway in 1966 when the company was formed by Knut Kloster and Ted Arison. In 1972 Arison took a bow from the company and accepted a position with Carnival Cruise Lines. What started as one lonely ship in NCL’s fleet though quickly grew and by 1979 they had a fleet of five cruise liners. After a couple of decades the company had been profitable but wasn’t seeing exponential or marked growth. It wasn’t until the year 2000 when a foreign cruise company bought up NCL when things really began kicking off.

New Management in 2000

Star Cruises, known in 2000 for being the largest Asian cruise company, bought Norwegian Cruise Lines and began implementing new policies that resulted in resounding success. Their most notable implemented strategy was the “freestyle cruising” philosophy which flew in the face of traditionally scheduled itinerary and cruise plans. Rather than have all guests take the same trips, under the “freestyle cruising” ideology, guests would have so many amenities to choose from, they could literally build their cruise around things they liked doing. Some activities that are available on the new cruise liners that Star Cruises invested in for the NCL include:

Since the buy-out, Star Cruises has sold off all but one of the original fleet ships of the NCL and they’ve replaced them with at current numbers, nine new ships including the Norwegian Epic – a monster of a boat that can fit over four-thousand people at max capacity!

Depending on where you are in the world, you’ll have a range of options when it comes to cruising aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines. For instance, if you live around the Seattle or LA areas, you’ll most likely enjoy trips to and from either Hawaii or Vancouver, BC.
