Cruises to Norwegian Fjords

Norway is a phenomenally vast and open land with chasms, plains and rolling hills that are so picturesque, they were featured in the filming of “the Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Among all of the geological wonders of this region, fjords have particular significance as they are extremely rare in other parts of the world and they offer some of the most scenic experiences that nature lovers, photographers and cruise enthusiasts could desire. If you’re considering a cruise down one or several of Norway’s famous fjords, the first thing you’ll want to know is what a fjord is, technically. This will help you when you’re caught wondering how such an immense mountain could be sliced right down the middle to form a valley such as the one you’ll be rolling down between fifteen to twenty-five knots while on your trip.

What Exactly Is a Fjord?

There are a few requirements for a geological feature to be a fjord. Though there are similar geographical features throughout the world, the fjord is a specific formation and without any of the following aspects, it cannot be considered a fjord.

  • A fjord is a narrow, long water throughway
  • A fjord is an inlet from the sea or some other body of water
  • Fjords have sheer cliffs on either side of them
  • The rock walls or cliffs must have been formed because of glacial activity

With all of these elements present, you find a fjord. Cruising the water at the base of a fjord valley is an unmistakable experience. People travel from all destinations across the world to see the landscapes for which Norway is known.

Cruise Companies in Norway

If you’re interested in going on a cruise through Norway’s fjord region, there are three main companies that offer cruises. There are certainly smaller vessels and independent operations available in Norway as well, but you can rely on these three companies to have the largest ships and the most extravagant amenities aboard while you travel:

  • Hurtigruten – This is a Norwegian company that employs a Philippino crew and has eleven out of their fourteen ships doing tours at any given time.
  • Fred Olsen Cruises – Fred Olsen’s boats are delightful. They’ve gotten good reviews on cruise sites across the web and while their fleet isn’t as large as Hurtigruten’s, their staff is entirely Scandinavian so you’ll know that you’re getting the in-depth Norwegian experience while surrounded by its people while cruising.
  • Costa Cruises – This company is based out of Hollywood, CA but they offer just as much insight into the region as the two Norwegian companies.

What to Expect on Your Cruise

Cruises are all about luxury. Expect to be pampered with five-star meals, activities aboard such as shuffleboard and plenty of swimming pools and hot tubs. Depending on the cruise line, food and drinks may even be included in the price of the cruise package. Naturally, your cruise will be geared around relaxation and sightseeing of the Norwegian port cities and fjords that you choose!
